Apartment hunting

Posted: June 27th, 2009 | Author: jocelynziegler | Filed under: Job, Life | No Comments »

I’ve recently been a bit burned out on the job search (one of my safety jobs rejected me- Bank Teller in Sidney Ohio) so I’ve decided to check into apartments. I’ve actually found an apartment with beautiful bay windows and a great location. I wish the job search was going as well. I’ve applied to a few jobs at HBO (I can dream, right?) as well as a job for a Social Media Manager for Bonneville radio stations which would be amazing. I will be applying to a few different Half-Price Books locations when I get back to Cincinnati. I just found the ad they posted on Careerbuilder and with two years at CD/Game Exchange and two years at F.Y.E. would make this a pretty easy transition.

I’m trying to keep my cool about this but I’m running low on money. My rent is paid up through the end of August and my parents have offered to help me out but I wouldn’t feel right burdening them with my living expenses. I’m still happily interning with CityBeat and I really wish they were hiring instead of laying off because I love the people. However, I’m keeping my cool. My mom keeps telling me that “something will come up.” And it will.

A quick update

I’ve been pretty busy recently I’m still interning and spending time with family and friends before I find my still illusive job. On that note, my cell phone is out of commission until Friday afternoon at the latest. I left my charger at home while visiting last weekend. So if you need me feel free to comment or email!

*** On a side note I would highly recommend Away We Go for a girls night out. It was a fantastic “tug at your heartstrings” movie. Additionally, it features the music of Alexi Murdoch which I thought was interesting because his album is a few years old (2006) but he’s amazing. A review of this to come soon!

GRADUATION! And the job search continues…

Posted: June 17th, 2009 | Author: jocelynziegler | Filed under: Job, Life | No Comments »

I graduated on Saturday. It was such a great day! I was thrilled to see my parents and the extended family on Sunday when my Grandparents celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. There I also met my second cousin Chole. It was just a great weekend.

Additionally, the job search has been … well, searchy. I found something that I’m so excited about but I’m trying not to be just in case it doesn’t pan out. It’s a writer/editer of Electronic communications and it would be so great for me. It’s basically what I’m doing at CityBeat with a little bit of projects I’ve done in college. I’m really excited about it.

Also, I went to a job search boot camp at UC today. It wasn’t exactly what I expected but I think it might help? I was able to talk to a representative from GE about a few positions I applied to at NBC. (GE owns NBC) I also touched base with Terry at the Career Development Center to see if he can help me out with the job search.

Other than that I made the Dean’s List my final quarter in college with a 3.4. Overall I have a 3.159. WOO-HOO!!!

Fixed the problem with the photo.

Apparently I missed that the second to last was slightly bigger than the others. However, it is fixed now and I changed the last one. My mom didn’t like the original one so I had to change it. Also, one more final project and then I’m finished with my undergrad. Woo-hoo!

Woo-hoo! Five pounds thinner!

I’ve lost 5 pounds in the last two weeks. I know its a small achievement but I’m really excited about it. Additionally, I’ve been working on finishing up the quarter and graduation. Things are going so well!

Observations from the last week

Well. I’m 22 now. That’s pretty cool I guess. I’ve been too swamped really to take it in, but I has that revelation when I was talking to a friend at dinner on Friday. So that probably the biggest observation of the week. Additionally…

-Tights should never be worn as pants. I saw it twice this week. It’s really not flattering or attractive so I don’t know why people think it’s a good idea. I mean really? You look ridiculous!
+ Old Jews telling jokes. Absolutely fantastic. Spent an hour watching and giggling.
+ I spent this quarter giving up alcohol. Then it was my birthday and I was like… enh. I’ll make the exception this week. And after this week I’ve decided that it’s probably best to continue giving it up until I get a job. I spent a lot of money but it was my birthday. So it’s fine.
+ I have tentatively fleshed out what I’m going to do with my life. Spending two years in Ohio. Paying off debt and saving some money. The I’m going to move. New York, Chicago, San Francisco. Somewhere because… well I’m not going to be able to do what I want here. Unless I can find some sort of amazing miracle media job in Ohio or I happen to find “that special someone.” But I don’t want to leave without some sort of safety net. So tentatively: Get job. Save Money. Move!
+ I love my friends. A few stopped by to see me this week and it was great. Thursday night was one the greatest nights I’ve had for awhile. I’ve been really happy lately. And a bit freaked out at what the future holds. But I’m sure it will be awesome.

Rough day? Seems like an understatement.

How is it that its only 2:03pm and I’ve found out I’m losing my health insurance in two weeks and I was stuck in an elevator for twenty minutes?

I have the greatest luck in the whole world. That is why. I’m still in school for two more weeks and I’m under my parents’ insurance. They were told that I would have insurance until August 31st. Today the insurance company realized they had made a mistake and gave me a two week notice. Happy graduation! Hope you don’t get sick!

Additionally, I was stuck in an elevator for 20 minutes. Today is not my day.

Who’s hiring?

Posted: May 27th, 2009 | Author: jocelynziegler | Filed under: Job | No Comments »

Today I googled “ohio now hiring” after going through Monster, Careerbuilder, and Craigslist today. The first result?

411 Strippers and Escorts *Now Hiring*

Awesome. I’m almost that desperate. But seriously, if I can’t get a job soon I’m going to have to move back home. As weird as this sounds I’m actually lucky I was robbed because I’m probably going to use the insurance money to pay my rent for July and August. I feel awful. I’ve invested so much in my education and in the last 3 months I’ve applied to 86 jobs. EIGHTY-SIX! I haven’t heard back from anyone. It’s starting to get sad. Yesterday I applied to be a manager a Blockbuster. Today I was feeling a little luckier and I applied for a few positions at Harpo Studios. At least, if I need to, I can move home again. So I at least have that peace of mind.

I really don’t want to work at McDonalds.

Fanboys – Rekindling the Star Wars nerd inside of me

Posted: May 25th, 2009 | Author: jocelynziegler | Filed under: Movie | No Comments »

Fanboys was recently released on DVD. If you haven’t heard of Fanboys I wouldn’t blame you. I saw the preview for this when Clerks 2 was released in theater (July 2006), but it took another two years for it to release in theaters/on DVD. The film deals with five friends from Ohio who go on a mission in 1998 to watch the rough cut of Star Wars Episode I.

First of all, I loved and could relate to this movie more than I had been able to anticipate. A little known fact- I was present at all three midnight showings for the first Star Wars movies. If that’s not embarrassing enough… When I was in junior high (around the first episode came out) my friends and I had a sleepover where we watched all 3 of the older (better) Star Wars movies. Then we made up a dance to the Mos Eisley Cantina theme song to perform for our parents when they picked us up. Additionally, I read the books in the Star Wars expanded universe. Yes. I was not a cool kid. After junior high & high school I decided to play it cool (yeah right) and hung up my Star Wars nerdery.

Fanboys changed all that. You know those junior high friends I made up the dance with? One of them watched this movie with me and there were parts that made us laugh so hard the other two people we were watching it with got worried about us. However, even if you don’t like Star Wars you can still appreciate the movie for it friendship and bonding that takes place on their cross country trip. Highly recommended for everyone!

The Mos Eisley Cantina song… In case you want to make your own dance?
